Crossing the Gate: Rituals, Tokens & Transformation
Show transcript
00:00:00: I want you to imagine just for a second that you are standing outside the gates of, um... like A massive theme park.
00:00:08: Okay yeah i could picture That
00:00:09: right and You're holding a little paper ticket in your hand or you know maybe it's Just a barcode on Your phone sure?
00:00:14: You walk up To The turnstile you Hand over that Ticket Or scan the screen the Little light turns green And you Walk
00:00:20: Through.
00:00:20: It is Totally normal day
00:00:21: Exactly!
00:00:22: It Is literally the most mundane Every Day Transaction In The World.
00:00:27: but What if I told you that this simple act like handing over a ticket at a gate is actually operating on the exact same mechanical level as an ancient religious ritual?
00:00:38: I mean, it sounds totally absurd when you put it that way.
00:00:40: Right.
00:00:41: Comparing a roller coaster entry to these profound spiritual rites feels like a massive stretch.
00:00:48: but y'know... If we look at them structurally, like systemically- The parallels are just wild!
00:00:54: They really are.
00:00:54: And um.. Just be clear for you listening.
00:00:57: As we dive into these theological notes today, We aren't here to like declare these religious texts as objective truth.
00:01:04: Definitely not!
00:01:05: We're looking at them entirely through the lenses of systems.
00:01:08: theory and anthropology were just impartially reporting on The mechanics of their philosophy Not taking sides or endorsing any specific religious viewpoint.
00:01:19: Yeah...we are just analyzing the frameworks provided in this source material.
00:01:22: Right Exactly.
00:01:23: But when you do that When you just look at the raw mechanics, it completely changes how you view human behavior.
00:01:30: And that is exactly our mission for this deep dive!
00:01:33: We are crashing together systems theory cultural anthropology and theology specifically looking at Latter-day Saint or LDS concepts of covenants and ordinances.
00:01:44: It's a fascinating mix of sources... ...it
00:01:46: really is.
00:01:47: we're gonna explore this really provocative idea from the text The concept that religious ordinances like Baptism, for instance might not just be symbolic rituals.
00:01:55: They might actually act as spiritual boundary crossing technologies which
00:01:59: is such cool phrase.
00:02:00: Okay Let's unpack this because to understand a boundary crossing technology We first have to understand why a boundary exists in the first place
00:02:08: right?
00:02:08: Which brings us to the core tenet of systems theory which Is that every single system is defined by its boundaries.
00:02:16: Okay, so a system without a boundary is...
00:02:19: It just simply does not exist.
00:02:20: Yeah I mean think about a biological cell.
00:02:22: its defining feature Is the cell wall
00:02:25: right?
00:02:25: The membrane
00:02:26: exactly.
00:02:27: yeah that wall decides what it's inside was outside of.
00:02:29: besides would nutrients get in?
00:02:31: and you know What waste gets expelled?
00:02:32: thanks sense.
00:02:33: if that wall ruptures the cell Just dissolves into its environment it dies.
00:02:39: And the exact same principle applies to human structures
00:02:41: Like organizations.
00:02:43: Yeah, an organization that has no clear sense of who works there and doesn't will just cease to function.
00:02:48: A family unit without boundaries dissolves
00:02:50: And the notes we're looking at map this pr- Perfectly onto scripture.
00:02:54: like these ancient texts are constantly drawing hard lines distinguishing between different states of being
00:02:59: a very clear line.
00:03:00: Yeah, you have the kingdom versus the world The sacred verses the profane the inside vs.. The outside.
00:03:07: but I do have to push back here on behalf Of anyone listening who maybe feels little uncomfortable with this.
00:03:12: okay?
00:03:12: What's the pushback?
00:03:13: well structurally speaking aren't boundaries usually seen as exclusionary?
00:03:18: or You know Negative like isn't a boundary just a wall designed to keep people out.
00:03:23: Yeah, that is very modern concern.
00:03:25: Right we definitely tend of view boundaries primarily as barriers to entry.
00:03:29: right but looking at the architecture these ideas in the source material The distinction isn't inherently exclusionary.
00:03:36: it is defining.
00:03:37: defining okay?
00:03:38: How?
00:03:38: so
00:03:39: let's look at the historical analogy of an old world kingdom.
00:03:42: What makes a king a King?
00:03:44: well his crown or his land.
00:03:47: It is the borders of His domain, yeah if His kingdom stretches out infinitely with no borders.
00:03:53: Or um If the borders are constantly shifting and entirely porous The laws of that Kingdom hold No weight.
00:03:59: Oh I see!
00:04:00: The boundary Is what gives this system its identity.
00:04:03: Without Identity there's no kingdom to belong To in the first place.
00:04:06: Sure i get That for an earthly kingdom like a physical king obviously needs A physical border to enforce physical Laws.
00:04:12: but we're talking about theology here.
00:04:15: Isn't a spiritual kingdom, especially heaven supposed to be like infinite?
00:04:19: Universally loving.
00:04:21: Why put a border on Heaven?
00:04:22: and that is the exact friction this framework addresses.
00:04:25: if a spiritual Kingdom Is totally infinite with absolutely no boundaries it absorbs everything.
00:04:31: Everything
00:04:32: yeah including chaos malice and disorder.
00:04:36: It ceases to Be ordered.
00:04:37: oh wow A heavenly system by definition in these texts is a space of perfect order-and-peace.
00:04:45: So the boundary doesn't exist to arbitrarily punish.
00:04:47: The people on the outside.
00:04:48: It's not just keeping people out for the sake of it.
00:04:50: No,
00:04:51: it exists to preserve the internal climate of the inside.
00:04:54: If you remove the boundary heaven Just becomes the world again.
00:04:57: that reframes the concept entirely.
00:04:59: the border preserves the climate.
00:05:00: okay But practically speaking if I am an outsider and i want to enjoy That internal climate How does a highly bordered system actually let me in without risking its own collapse
00:05:11: which is?
00:05:15: the dawn of time.
00:05:16: How do you generate trust across a boundary?
00:05:18: Right, because you don't know who is crossing over.
00:05:20: Exactly!
00:05:21: You can't just have people wandering across the border... ...of a medieval kingdom and declaring themselves loyal subjects without some kind of verification.
00:05:29: That would
00:05:30: be chaos.
00:05:31: It introduces that exact chaos we've talked about into this system.
00:05:35: The people on the inside have to know.. ..the new person isn't gonna burn the village down.
00:05:41: So how did historical societies handle that?
00:05:44: Like, How do they actually Do it?
00:05:46: well the sources bring up The work of an early twentieth century Anthropologist named Arnold van Genep.
00:05:51: Okay
00:05:52: He studied cultures across human history and found That society's universally used something called rights Of passage to solve this exact problem of moving An outsider To the inside.
00:06:03: I've heard that term.
00:06:03: yeah.
00:06:04: And the structure of these rites A passage is astonishingly consistent Across geography.
00:06:09: in time
00:06:09: It's like a three step structure, right?
00:06:11: Yes.
00:06:11: Oh
00:06:11: Step one A person leaves an old identity.
00:06:15: Okay
00:06:16: Step two They pass through a transition that sort of in between phase
00:06:20: Like the middle ground
00:06:21: Right.
00:06:22: And then Step Three The return With new identity That is formally recognized by community.
00:06:29: Wow I mean think about the coronation Of those Old World Kings we just mentioned.
00:06:33: A prince Doesn't just wake up One day walk into throne room and say Hey guys I'm in charge now.
00:06:38: Yeah,
00:06:39: no that wouldn't fly.
00:06:40: there is a highly structured intensely public right of
00:06:44: passage because a coronation isn't just you know putting a shiny hat on a guy.
00:06:48: There's a massive psychological shift happening for the entire country.
00:06:52: exactly The air leaves their old identity behind.
00:06:56: They undergo the transition which involves anointing taking specific oaths the actual physical crowning Right and then they are presented to the people in their new identity as the monarch.
00:07:06: And consider the massive trade-off happening during that ceremony.
00:07:09: The
00:07:09: trade off?
00:07:10: Yeah, the new king is trading the relative freedom and autonomy of an individual for the heavy defining responsibility of embodying the entire system.
00:07:17: Oh!
00:07:18: That's heavy.
00:07:18: They are now bound by the rules of the crown.
00:07:26: This perfectly explains why religions place such a massive emphasis on physical ordinances.
00:07:32: If you look at this through the lens of our LDS source text, an ordinance like a baptism isn't just a nice symbolic gesture...
00:07:40: Not at all!
00:07:41: It is the actual mechanism where spiritual belonging is publicly recognized by the community.
00:07:47: it's The Coronation but On A Personal
00:07:50: Spiritual Level.
00:07:51: That's great way to put it.
00:07:52: You are leaving old identity transitioning through the water and returning with a new, recognized identity as part of The Covenant's system.
00:08:00: But the right-of passage is just an event crossing the boundary?
00:08:04: We have to ask our next logical question here which is what does this tool actually use for unlocking the gate during that event?
00:08:11: And
00:08:12: it brings us back into that theme park analogy from our hook!
00:08:15: You're standing at the Gate you hand over your ticket... Our notes make this brilliant point that the ticket isn't fundamentally about money.
00:08:21: Right.
00:08:22: The money is secondary.
00:08:23: Yes, you bought it But at the exact moment of entry... ...the ticket functions as a visible object representing an invisible agreement.
00:08:30: By handing over It You are essentially saying I understand rules in this world and I am willing to participate In them.
00:08:37: You're agreeing that you won't like hop out on the roller coaster mid-ride.
00:08:41: Please don't do that.
00:08:42: Yeah
00:08:42: Exactly What's
00:08:47: fascinating here Is that in systems language That ticket was called a token
00:08:51: A token.
00:08:52: Right, a tokens.
00:08:53: entire purpose is to carry information across the boundary.
00:08:58: Think about your daily life Yeah!
00:09:00: A subway card An ID badge at high security corporate building.
00:09:04: Sure
00:09:04: you use them all of time
00:09:05: Exactly.
00:09:06: And The Token communicates four vital pieces of information into this system Identity Alignment Commitment and Permission
00:09:13: Identity alignment commitment permission.
00:09:16: Yep
00:09:16: It proves You are who say you're that you align with the system's requirements, that you are committed to its rules and therefore have permission to enter.
00:09:26: So how does this systems theory actually map onto religious texts?
00:09:31: Well if we open the Gospel of John chapter three verse five it says...
00:09:40: Okay a very famous verse!
00:09:41: Right.
00:09:42: but If read that verse with Systems Theory glasses on The vocabulary practically jumps off page.
00:09:47: Enter Kingdom,
00:09:50: born.
00:09:50: Oh wow!
00:09:51: Every single one of those words implies movement from one state to another.
00:09:56: they are boundary crossing terms.
00:09:57: Here's where it gets really interesting when we reframe baptism based on these concepts.
00:10:03: It completely shifts the paradigm.
00:10:06: We spend so much time focusing on the physical act, like water.
00:10:10: The white clothes and specific words being said.
00:10:13: but text suggests that the physical acts functions as a tokenized representation of a covenantal relationship.
00:10:19: Yes
00:10:19: It's an alignment mechanism.
00:10:21: it is not God sitting up there acting like cosmic bureaucrat who won't let you in because your administrative paperwork isn't filed in triplicate You know?
00:10:28: No!
00:10:28: God doesn't need the water.
00:10:29: Water does have magical properties to bypass security system.
00:10:33: Exactly its about human psychology.
00:10:35: We can't just silently agree to a system in our heads and expect to be fully integrated.
00:10:40: We're not built that way!
00:10:41: Right, relationships require expression... ...and alignment requires embodiment.
00:10:45: Like if I love someone….
00:10:47: …I can't feel it silently forever.
00:10:49: At some point I have to buy a ring or stand up in front of my friends & family And say vows You
00:10:54: have make you real.
00:10:55: The inner reality has to take on a physical shape, to be recognized by the social
00:11:18: system.
00:11:22: perfect insider.
00:11:23: Definitely not, I mean if you just got hired at a new job and You scan your shiny new ID badge on the first day?
00:11:30: You might be in the building but you have no idea where The coffee machine is
00:11:34: right...you don't know the inside jokes
00:11:35: exactly!
00:11:36: You aren't fully integrated yet.
00:11:37: So to explain the mechanics of that post-entry phase..the sources bring In another concept from Anthropology coin by Victor Turner.
00:11:46: okay what Is it?
00:11:47: It's the concept Of liminality.
00:11:49: Liminality yeah.
00:11:50: Liminality is the threshold state.
00:11:52: It's that messy middle space between identities.
00:11:56: You have crossed the boundary.
00:11:58: you are no longer who you used to be But you're not quite who you will become.
00:12:02: it like the cocoon phase.
00:12:03: fix a
00:12:03: cocoon face.
00:12:04: Yeah,
00:12:05: you're NOT a caterpillar anymore but your definitely not a butterfly yet?
00:12:08: Your just this sort of vulnerable developing soup.
00:12:12: well That Is A Very Vivid Slightly gross way to put it,
00:12:15: but it works.
00:12:16: It is accurate Yes and there was a profound psychological reason why this phase exists.
00:12:22: When you enter liminality You have stripped off your old armor Your old identity in defense mechanisms But you haven't grown your new ones yet.
00:12:29: So you're super vulnerable
00:12:31: highly vulnerable which means?
00:12:32: You are highly malleable.
00:12:34: The new system can now shape your values.
00:12:36: the text suggests that discipleship itself like the entire religious life lived after making a covenant, is a prolonged liminal journey.
00:12:46: It happens AFTER the commitment was made but BEFORE the transformation is
00:12:50: complete.".
00:12:50: This
00:12:51: completely flips how we view The Gate.
00:12:53: Doesn't it?
00:12:53: Yeah!
00:12:54: If discipleship IS A LIMINAL STATE then the ordinance isn't a graduation ceremony...it's an ENROLMENT.
00:13:00: IT'S THE STARTING LINE.
00:13:01: It's not the arrival…It's the entry.
00:13:03: The gate is merely where the journey starts.
00:13:06: You hand over the token to get into theme park, but handing over ticket isn't point of trip.
00:13:11: Right!
00:13:12: Standing at gate is not fun.
00:13:13: The
00:13:13: point is riding rides navigating parks and participating in world you just entered.
00:13:18: The token gets through turn style so real psychological rewiring can begin.
00:13:23: Exactly!
00:13:24: Real work is process being molded by system which actually forces us look at ultimate destination.
00:13:32: Where are we going?
00:13:33: If we are enrolling in a system and stepping into a liminal state of transformation, what is the ultimate system that you're actually preparing for?
00:13:41: The big leagues.
00:13:42: The final destination!
00:13:44: If we connect this to the bigger picture... ...the text introduces its most compelling idea Heaven as the highest order containing system.
00:13:53: Let me stop there for second.
00:13:55: What does CONTAINING SYSTEM ACTUALLY MEAN IN THIS CONTEXT?
00:13:58: Think Russian nesting dolls.
00:14:00: Okay
00:14:01: Systems exist within other systems.
00:14:04: A biological cell is a system, but it's contained within an organ.
00:14:08: The organ is contained in the body and the bodies are contained inside of family which contains society.
00:14:15: In this theological framework Heaven is the ultimate container.
00:14:19: It is the peak organizational structure.
00:14:23: We often think that heaven just as nice place with clouds you know reward for being good.
00:14:28: But systems theory asks us to view it as a perfectly integrated society governed by divine law.
00:14:34: It is the final nesting doll!
00:14:36: And remember what we said earlier, A kingdom without boundaries isn't a Kingdom?
00:14:40: Right If heaven is a perfectly ordered system... ...it must have boundaries otherwise would just absorb chaos of world and cease to be perfectly ordered.
00:14:48: Therefore entry into this highest order system cannot be arbitrary.
00:14:53: The challenge getting in Heaven under framework isn't really a question of whether God is willing to accept us.
00:14:59: It's not about him just liking us enough?
00:15:02: No, it's a structural question of alignment!
00:15:05: Are we capable of operating within that perfect order without breaking
00:15:09: it?".
00:15:09: Oh wow... That is massive shift in perspective.
00:15:12: Under this framework ordinances aren't VIP passwords you buy To get past the bouncer at The Heavenly Nightclub.
00:15:18: Not at all.
00:15:19: When you perform the ordinance, when you present the token You are signaling a willingness to be transformed during that liminal lifelong journey.
00:15:28: Yeah The goal is that by the time you reach the ultimate system... ...you can actually survive the atmosphere!
00:15:34: You've been acclimated To the rules of the kingdom.
00:15:36: It's about trade-offs again Just like the Prince At the Coronation Right?
00:15:39: The autonomy trade off.
00:15:40: You were treating the autonomy Of your old chaotic self For the privilege and responsibility Of existing within A perfectly unified System.
00:15:48: The token proves you understand the trade-off.
00:15:50: So what does this whole mean?
00:15:52: I mean, we started with a theme park ticket and ended up analyzing the structural boundaries of heaven itself.
00:15:57: It's been quite a journey.
00:15:58: it really
00:15:59: has but it distills down to a really profound question posed by the text.
00:16:03: The real question isn't why does God require ordinances?
00:16:07: the question is What kind of being can live within a heavenly system
00:16:11: in every gate in scripture Every mention of entering a kingdom and, frankly every complex boundary in our own societal systems is ultimately asking the same underlying question.
00:16:22: Which
00:16:23: is...
00:16:23: Are you prepared to become the kind of person who belongs inside?
00:16:28: The ordinance, the ritual...the rite of passage.
00:16:31: It is just the visible evidence of that internal alignment.
00:16:34: Yeah it's the proof.
00:16:35: you're willing to undergo the messy cocoon phase together.
00:16:38: There's
00:16:38: a physical proof for an invisible commitment And I want leave our listener with final thought to mull over.
00:16:45: We've spent this whole time talking about spiritual tokens Ancient coronations and religious rites of passage.
00:16:52: We did, but I want you to think about the mundane everyday tokens in your own secular life.
00:16:58: Think about the physical act of signing a thirty-year mortgage... All right
00:17:02: that's big one!
00:17:02: Right?
00:17:03: or think about putting on work uniform every morning and raising hand.
00:17:08: take an oath office.
00:17:10: if these spiritual token are designed systematically align us with cosmic systems.
00:17:15: How might these everyday physical tokens be secretly rewiring our psychological identities before we even realize that we've crossed a threshold?
00:17:24: That is a fascinating question.
00:17:26: Are
00:17:26: handing over tickets to theme parks, but haven't fully understood the rules too?
00:17:29: Probably
00:17:30: more often than I think...
00:17:31: Yeah!
00:17:32: Thank you so much for joining us on this deep dive Keep questioning boundaries of systems around and keep an eye out at your hand.
